Danny La Rue

Danny La Rue was one of Britain’s most famous and pioneering drag performers, becoming a household name through his glamorous stage shows, television appearances and sharp comedic wit.

 

Born Daniel Patrick Carroll in Ireland in 1927, he moved to London as a child and later rose to fame during the 1950s and 60s, at a time when drag performance was still considered highly controversial. Despite this, Danny became one of the first drag artists to achieve mainstream success in the UK.

 

Known for his elaborate gowns, celebrity impersonations and quick-fire humour, he performed in theatres, clubs and television shows across Britain for decades.

 

He also became a familiar face within London’s gay scene and was admired for helping bring drag entertainment into the public spotlight long before it became widely accepted.

 

Danny La Rue remained an iconic figure in British entertainment history and a trailblazer for generations of LGBTQ+ performers who followed.
